Samburu National Reserve

The Samburu National Reserve is located on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River in Kenya.Across the river is the Buffalo Spring and Shaba National Reserve in the northern Kenya formerly known as the Northern frontier district. To get to Samburu you pass on the shoulder of the second highest peak in Africa after Mt Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya and drive northwards to the vast rangelands stretching into the distant horizon clouded by dust and heat-haze.

This hot and dry arid and semi-arid desert is one of the most dramatic African wildernesses nurtured by the Uaso Nyiro River which flows through the reserves. The reserve is rich in game and with abundance of rare northern specialist species such as the Gravy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, longneck gerenuk, Somali ostrich also popular known as the Samburu Special Five. The reserve is also home to a minimum of 900 Elephants. Wild dog are common in this protected area. Large predators such as the lion, king of the jungle lazing on the African savannah  grass, leopards,cheetah, are some of the important attractions.Kamuyak the miracle lioness that adopted a baby oryx lives here at Samburu National Reserve.

Birdlife is abundant with over 450 species recorded. Birds of the arid northern country and a number of riverine forest species. Lesser Kestrel and the Taita falcon are species of global conservation concern and are both found here. Five other species categorized as venerable are also recorded in this reserve. These are the White-Headed Vulture, Great Egret, African Darter, Martial Eagle and Yellow-Billed Ox-Pecker. The critically endangered pancake tortoise is also found in this reserve.
